Dinesohn, Jacob: (1856-1919)

Russian Yiddish novelist. He was born in the district of Kovno. His first Yiddish novel, For the Parents' Sins, was banned by the Russian censor. His second, The Beloved and the Pleasant, or The Black Youth sold more than 200,000 copies. In 1885 he settled in Warsaw. He was the pioneer of the Yiddish sentimental novel and also helped to modernize elementary Jewish education by founding secular schools.
